Scenes on a Sea of Joy and Sorrow

1999
6 paintings, oil on panel, Styrofoam, electric lights, Mylar, plastic, text plaques

Scenes on a Sea of Joy and Sorrow is a series of six works made to accompany JOYJOYSORROW. My sources included images from popular naval stories: warships, ghost ships, pirate ships, sinking ships, lifeboats, as well as a J. M. W. Turner painting. Each work included interior lighting, silver Mylar, craft materials like Styrofoam and tinsel, and a title plate with a small wire armature. These scenes depicted various states of mind: hope, terror, melancholia, leadership, deceit, and facing death.
